General information about traveling to Brno can be found here.
Getting to Brno By air There is an international airport in Brno, connecting Brno with several European cities. The set of possible destinations may change from time to time, so it is wise and recommended to visit Brno International Airport web page for actual information. Currently (late of 2008) there are direct international flights to London (Stansted) and Moscow (Vnukovo) and there are also domestic flights between Brno and Prague (Ruzyně). However, the domestic flights are usually convenient only in the case that there is an option to buy the domestic air ticket as a part of the main air ticket to Czech Republic. Otherwise, in most cases flying is too expensive solution of the problem how to get to Brno from Prague, which does not save a significant portion of time. In most cases it is optimal to fly to Vienna or Prague and then use the bus or railway transportaion. In some cases it could be also convenient to fly to Bratislava (the capital of Slovakia) and then get to Brno by bus or train. Some air companies, like the Czech Airlines (ČSA), offer a bus ticket from the Prague airport to Brno as an option for some flights to Czech Republic. Similar service also offers Austrian Airlines for geting to Brno from Vienna. If you have such a possibility, it could be one of the best choices.
By bus Brno is located at the crossroads of pan-European highways connecting east with west (France-Ukraine, E 50) and north with south (Scandinavia - the Balkans, E 65). This convenient location yields to Brno a possibility of a direct bus connection to most major European cities. The distance 210 km from Prague (to the southeast), 120 km from Vienna (to the north) and 140 km from Bratislava (to the northwest) allows to combine the bus transportation with flights to these cities. The details of your bus connections to Brno from various European cities including Prague, Vienna and Bratislava you may check on web pages of the Czech Integrated Transportation System, IDOS. By bus from the Prague airport Between 5:00 am and 9:00 pm there is a practically continuous bus service between Brno and Prague. The time interval between two next buses usually vary from 15 to 30 minutes. Some bus lines may start at the Prague airport Praha-Ruzyně, whereas the other lines have their starting point at the central bus station Praha-Florenc, which is located more close to the center of the city. It is also possible (and may be optimal) to use the Prague public transportation to get from Ruzyně to Florenc, where one may buy the ticket for the nearest bus to Brno. If you decide to use taxi for getting from Ruzyně to Florenc, you may consider about 400 CZK or more for this ride. The travel time from Praha-Florenc to Brno is about 3 hours, from Praha-Ruzyně it takes about 4 hours (including 30 minutes long stand at the central bus station Praha-Florenc). The one-way bus ticket Prague-Brno costs about 200-260 CZK. In Brno, there are practically two possibilities where you can get off the bus. If you can choose, it is better to leave the bus at the station Brno-hotel Grand, which has a better connection to the part of the city where the conference is located. But if you get off at the central bus terminal Brno-Zvonařka, which is the second possibility, it is also not too bad. There are several companies and travel agencies which offer the bus connection. Among others, we may recommend e.g. the Student Agency, which has pretty comfortable air-conditioned (yellow) buses and a friendly personnel. By bus from the Vienna airport Similar, but not so frequent bus connection there exists also between Brno and Vienna. By recent experiences of many travelers the choice of the Vienna airport for getting to Brno is one of the best. The travel time is about 3 hours and the price of the one-way ticket may vary in the range about 160-310 CZK (or 8-16 EUR), depending on your starting point in Vienna (the center or the airport) and the travel agency. The connection is provided by Student Agency (see also here) and Tourbus. Useful information about the connections from the Vienna airport to the center and other destinations can be also found on web pages of the Vienna International Airport. By bus from Bratislava airport The airport in Bratislava is also not very large and although there are more international flights to Bratislava than to Brno, you will probably find this variant convenient only in some special cases. The travel time between Brno and Bratislava center is about 2 hours and the ticket costs approximately 220 CZK or 9 EUR. The airport (Letisko) is connected with the center of Bratislava by bus no. 61 (or no. N61 during the night hours). If you want to get to the Bus station (Autobusová stanica), you have to change the bus at the stop Račianske myto to bus no. 21 or at Bajkalská to bus no. 205. The details of your connection you can check here.
By train Brno is also an important railway junction and a stop of Euro-City and Inter-City Expresses. The rail routes passing through Brno are parallel to the main highways and motorways. They connect the Balkans with Western Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic region. Although the bus connection to Prague is more convenient (faster and cheaper) than the train, for the connection Vienna-Brno the railway could be the best choice. The travel time Wien-Südbahnhof - Brno is about 1 hour 45 minutes and there are at least 8 trains each day in both directions. In Vienna, the connection between the airport and the railway station Wien-Mitte is served by the City Airpot Train. The interval between two successive trains is about 30 minutes, the travel time is (non-stop) 16 minutes. The travel time between Wien-Mitte and Wien-Südbahnhof is about 5 minutes. In case of a good air connection to Bratislava, it may by also convenient to continue to Brno by train from Bratislava, because the buses no. 61 and no. N61 stop at main railway station in Bratislava and you need not to change the buses of the public transportation. The travel time from Bratislava to Brno by train is the same as from Vienna, about 1 hour 45 minutes. The details of the train connection to Brno also may be checked on web pages of IDOS or Deutsche Bahn.
By car The general information is similar to the bus connection. Brno is located at the crossroads of pan-European highways connecting east with west (France-Ukraine, E 50) and north with south (Scandinavia - the Balkans, E 65). Public transportation in Brno Brno and its neighborhood are serviced by an integrated public transport system, consisting of trams, buses, trolley buses and local trains. Travel tickets are unified and their validity is time and zone limited. For traveling from the center of the city, including the bus and railway stations to your hotel or conference location, you need a two-zone ticket for 60 minutes. The price of the ticket currently is 15 CZK (but may be raised in near future).
In Brno there is no underground so far, but its construction is under consideration in connection with the ambitious project Europoint (see also here for some unofficial information in English) of building a new railway terminal in southern part of the city. It is known that the project is coordinated with similar project in Vienna, BahnhofCity.
Getting to hotels and conference location All important conference locations will be connected by the conference bus service. The participants may also use the public city transportation. Certainly, the participants can also use the taxi services, which, however, are relatively expensive in Czech Republic.
Conference Venue The conference venue at Kolejní is a large square at the urban district Brno-Královo pole, where there are located the main conference building (with all the conference lecture rooms), the Hotel Palacký and the Cafeteria. The location is connected with the rest of the city by a circle bus line no. 53. Nearby there is also the terminus “Technologický park” of the tram lines no. 12 and 13, where one can switch to the line no. 53. In case of an appropriate, not too rainy weather it is also possible to walk by a rural and then by a forest way directly to the main conference building at Kolejní 4.
Hotels Continental and International Both of the hotels are located at the center of the city. In a walking distance from both of the hotels there is a junction of the city public transportation “Česká”. One can use the tram lines no. 12, 13 to reach the terminus “Technologický park” or in the opposite direction, the junction “Hlavní nádraží”, located nearby the main railway station “Brno Hlavní nádraží” and the bus terminal at the Hotel Grand. Not far from the Hotel Continental there is the Assembly Hall of the Brno University Technology, where there will take place the Welcome Party. On the other hand, the restaurant Lucullus at the Hotel International will be the venue of the Conference Dinner.
Bus terminal Zvonařka It is the main bus terminal in Brno. Nearby there is a station of the tram no. 12. Alternatively, if your luggage is not too heavy, you may walk about 600 meters from “Zvonařka”, through the shopping center “Galerie Vaňkovka”, to the junction “Hlavní nádraží”. There you can take the tram no. 12 or 13 to “Česká” or “Technologický park”.
International Airport Brno The International Airport is located at the opposite side of the city as the conference venue, at the urban district Brno-Tuřany. From this location, you may reach the junction “Hlavní nádraží” by the bus line no. 76
Night Transportation During the late evening and night hours (approximately after 22:30) some tram lines and buses are replaced by a system of overnight buses. The lines no. 12 and 13 between the junction “Hlavní nádraží” and the terminus “Technologický park” may be replaced by the night bus no. 99, which also reaches the terminus of the bus no. 53 at Kolejní. The overnight replacement of the bus no. 76 between the International Airport and “Hlavní nádraží” is the bus no. 89. The interval between two successive night buses vary between 30 minutes and 1 hour (after the midnight). Since “Zvonařka” is in a walking distance from the junction “Hlavní nádraží”, usually it make no sense to wait for the overnight bus (no. 94 and 95). However, because of safety reasons, we do not recommend to walk alone at this district during the very late night hours. In such a situation, it is better to take the taxi. On the other hand, the locations of the conference venue as well as of the hotels Continental and International are at the safe area (for 24 hours per a day).
